Mordecai Garkavy

     Mordecai Garkavy married Elke Shteyn, daughter of Gershon Shteyn. He was born circa 1838 at Novogrudok, Novogrudok, Minsk; aged 12 in 1850. He was the son of Menahem Mendil Munk and Chaya Pesil Garkavy. He was born circa 1840; aged 88 at death in 1928. He was born circa 1841. He died on 17 June 1928 at 18 Eldridge Street, New York, New York; as Mordechai HARKAVY; 888; peddler; widower; died in Bronx at Home of the Daughters of Jacob; father as Mendel HARKAVY; mother as Chai Peshkin; burial arrangements by son Mark HARKAVY; buried Mt.      He was for many years a middleman between merchants at Belostok, Bialystok, Grodno. Mordecai Garkavy was also known as Mordecai Harkavy Munk. He appeared on the census of October 1850 at Novogrudok, Novogrudok, Minsk, appeared on the 1850 Revision List as Mordukh GARKAVY, age 12. He lived in 1903 at New York, New York. He appeared on the census of 10 January 1920 at 18 Eldridge Street, New York, New York, as Isaac HARKAVY; born c 1840, Grodno; living as boarder in home of Morris HARRIS and Sarah HARRIS; occupation watchman, religious articles. He appeared on the census of 1 June 1925 at Home of the Daughters of Jacob, East 167th Street, Bronx, New York, as Mordechai HARKAVY; previous residence Eldridge Street; in U.S. 32 years (i.e. 1893.) As of 17 June 1928, Mordecai Garkavy was also known as Mordecai Harkavy.
