Louis Harkavy

     Louis Harkavy was born on 1 July 1896 at Minsk; per 1915 Declaration of Intention. He was the son of Girsh Garkavy and Mariska Garkavy. He married Ethel Gurwicz, daughter of Moses Gurwicz and Risha Bayla Harkavy, on 5 May 1931 at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; groom Louis HARKAVY, 31, salesman, of Brooklyn, NY; son of Hirsch HARKAVY and Mary COPLAN; bride Ethel GURWICZ, 25, of Ottawa; daughter of Moses GURWICZ and Risha Bayla HARKAVY. He died on 13 October 1973 at Lakewood, New Jersey, at age 77; buried in Riverside Cemetery, Saddle Brook.
     He immigrated on 29 September 1913 to Ellis Island, New York, as Leibe GARKAWY, 17, baker; aboard George Washington from Bremen; last residence Minsk; closest kin father Hirsch GARKAWY, Minsk; en route to uncle Max SAWICKY [?], 201 Deviston [?] Ave, Brooklyn. He on 13 December 1915 at 49 Stagg Street, Brooklyn, New York, filed Declaration of Intention with Kings County Supreme Court as Louis HARKAVY, born 1 Jul 1896 in Minsk; paper box maker. He lived in February 1932 at 492 Howard Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, address at time of mother Mary's return from Canada to the U.S. He appeared on the census of 3 April 1940 at 171 Scholes Street, Brooklyn, New York, as Simon HARKAVY, 6.
